How Wells Are Drilled

A typical well is constructed through layers of sand, gravel and clay. Sections of pipe are placed into the excavation, with perforated sections called well screens that allow water to flow into the pipe and be pumped to the surface. Because water cannot easily move through heavy clay soils, there are generally no well screens located in those areas. Cement is used to create a sanitary seal to protect the well from surface contamination.
